The Hugo Award-winning graphic novel on which the movie is based chronicles the fall from grace of a group of super-heroes plagued by all-too-human failings. Along the way, the concept of the super-hero is dissected as the heroes are stalked by an unknown assassin.The movie is set in the mid-1980s during a time of increased nuclear tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. Richard Nixon, in this alternate reality, is in his fifth term as president and the world's superheroes have been forcibly retired.
